A New Thing

On Sunday 7 April, a large congregation gathered in St Thomas’ to welcome Ben Doolan as the Master of the Chapel of St Thomas the Martyr.

We have an unusual legal status — no parish and no vicar, but a “Master”. And we have a new Master.

There were formal declarations and oaths, symbols of shared Christian life and ministry, prayer, and messages of welcome from other Christian traditions and other faiths.

Bishop Christine spoke of Judas’ fear of heavy emotion and of Mary of Bethany, one of Lazarus’ sisters, pouring out all her treasure in gratitude to Jesus [John 12:1-8].

Visitors and locals joined in unifying singing. The people of St Thomas’ committed themselves to work together with Ben. Visitors and locals joined in unifying singing and afterwards gathered for refreshments the Pandon Room of the Civic Centre.

We had heard from Isaiah and Bishop Christine had expounded:

I am about to do a new thing;
   now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
   and rivers in the desert. [Isaiah 43:18-19]

There is a fresh face amongst the leadership at St Thomas’ and a new stage of our life and work is starting.
